Virginia wrestling camp wraps up

A week long camp open up to Central Virginia wrestlers, the University of Virginia wrapped up its week-long wrestling camp on Friday.

The camp, run by Cavaliers coach Steve Garland, offers a more hands on approach than most summer camps as Garland and his staff spend much of the day working with wrestlers one-on-one as opposed to simply hosting all-day wrestling tournaments. By doing so Garland feels that it offers the wrestlers at the camp a better idea of what kind of wrestling program that UVa is running.

“A lot of camps are just machines,” Garland said. “It’s 45 minutes of technique. Then its matches through out. There’s no personal touch and no developing relationships. I try to run this camp like our program. We want to make sure we establish a relationship with this kids and hopefully make a positive impact in their lives.”

Look next week for more from the wrestling scene as Scrimmage Play profiles a local wrestler headed for junior nationals.
