FUMA, Blue Ridge, Woodberry wrestlers place at state tournament

A pair of Fork Union wrestlers found their way into the state’s top three at the 2023 VISAA state wrestling tournament, with Thomas Manganiello taking the state runner-up spot at 150 pounds while Lucas Yates took third at 157 pounds. 

 

Manganiello got to the state championship match with three pins and a forfeit win in the state quarterfinals. Manganiello pinned Trey Moffett of Grace Christian in the semis and then fell by pin to state champion Mitchell Faglioni. 

 

Lucas Yates rang up a pin and then a 13-2 major decision in the state quarterfinals, then fell 4-1 in the state semifinals. Undaunted, Yates won his consolation semifinal 9-2, then came up with a 17-0 tech fall against St. Christopher’s Liam Johnson 17-0.  

 

The Blue Devils had two other placers as Ronan Montez finished fifth at 132 pounds and Ethan Stroh placed fourth at 138 pounds.

 

Blue Ridge’s Aito Omura took fifth place for the Barons at 126 pounds, and he took a hard route there after getting pinned in the state quarterfinals. Omura than won two straight consolation rounds by pin before losing a 10-6 decision in the consolation semifinals. Omura bounced back one more time and took fifth place with a pin in the fifth place match, putting Cape Henry’s Adam Feldman on his back.

 

The Barons’ Xavier Lotkin took seventh at 165 pounds and Cedric Jungmann took seventh at 285 pounds. 

 

For Woodberry Forest, J.B. Carrol placed seventh at 150 pounds and Gene Park placed seventh at 175 pounds.
