Heinemann gem sparks Monticello past Christiansburg, into state tourney

Monticello baseball is living on the edge lately, and it’s working out just fine for the Mustangs so far. Because of their knack for winning close games, they’ll now get a chance to play for a state title next week.

Monticello edged out Christiansburg 2-0 Wednesday night after a long trip to Tunstall  High School for the Region 3A West semifinals. Sophomore Parker Heinemann spun a gem of a game on the mound to win it for the Mustangs, scattering six hits and striking out to throw a complete game shutout.

The victory advanced the Mustangs to the region final and secured a Group 3A state semifinal berth at Liberty University next Friday.

Monticello got an early lift from an RBI double by Jon Heuchert that played Tre Dudle in the first inning. In the second, Kyle Jarrell scored on a wild pitch.

From there, Heinemann took over.

The sophomore righthander got out of key bases loaded jams unscathed in both the second and sixth innings.

The Mustangs will face Rustburg for the region championship Friday at Tunstall at 6 p.m.
