Western stumbles against Salem

After a fantastic end to the regular season for Western Albemarle’s boys lacrosse team, things swung back the other way for the inexperienced Warriors against an efficient Salem squad that made the most of their scoring chances.

Salem mowed down Western 15-4 Tuesday night in the Jefferson District in Lynchburg at No.1-seed E.C. Glass’ home field.

Western found itself down 12-1 at the half as Salem buried 50 percent of their scoring chances before the break. Salem picked apart Western’s zone approach on defense, forcing Western to eventually change their approach to contain the Spartans.

Western’s offense couldn’t get going throughout the contest either, though Abbot Wallenborn, Justin Haws and Thomas Dudley managed to score for the Warriors. Wallenbron set the table for Dudley on his goal.

Chad Fisher had four goals for Salem while teammate Joey Dishaw matched that effort with four scores of his own.

Western now battles Rockbridge, who fell to top-seed E.C. Glass on Thursday, for the right to play in the Region II playoffs. Three squads from the Jefferson District advance.
