Western girls tennis beats Albemarle in rivalry clash

After being postponed already by weather and then left pushing water off the court before Wednesday’s match, Western and Albemarle girls tennis finally got underway with their second match of the season.

The Warriors picked up largely where they left off the last time the two squads played a picked up an 8-1 victory to stay unbeaten on the season. Western beat Albemarle 9-0 in the first meeting.

The No. 2 spot on the ladder provided one of the day’s best matches with Hannah Kearns out-battling Albemarle senior Maddie Williamson for an 8-4 win. Williamson had to fight back from a 3-0 hole to challenge Kearns.

No. 3 singles also provided a tight battle with Western’s Lauren Kearns beating Beth Shafer  8-2 and Western’s Rosy IX had to battle for an 8-3 win over Kelsey Marks. The Patriots’ lone victory came at No. 6 singles where Cami Pastore beat Molly Servine 8-5.

The Patriots will take on Monticello Thursday while Western will host Charlottesville also on Thursday.
