Warriors pick up 2-0 win

Western Albemarle’s field hockey team picked up a critical victory over Monticello Thursday night, winning 2-0 on the strength of the Warriors’ midfield’s strong, consistent play.

The Warriors’ got goals from Olivia Hajek in the first half and Moira Wright in the second half to drive the scoring.

The game was played even throughout, with both midfields controlling the action. Becca Stoner, Emma Weiss and Tess Lohr all anchored the Warriors in the midfield.

The victory is a critical one as the usual three-team race for the top spots in the Jefferson District is developing. Orange County currently sits in first with Western in second and Monticello close behind in third.

Thursday’s Orange/Monticello matchup and a Monday October 18 battle between the Warriors and Hornets will go a long way toward shaking out the district race.
