Unshaken

Goochland didn’t get rattled. They were down five runs before a single Bulldog stepped in the batter’s box, but Goochland didn’t come unglued.
“We hadn’t been in that situation a lot this year but the guys showed a lot of composure,” said Goochland Wes Farkas. “We made sure we got quality at bats.”
That patience and composure proved to be enough as the Bulldogs rallied for an 8-5 victory over Bluestone in the Conference 34 semifinals Wednesday. With the victory, Goochland secured a spot in the Region 2A East tournament and will battle for a conference title Thursday.
The Bulldogs scratched out a pair of runs in the first inning, with Scott Carter putting the pressure on Bluestone with a pair of steals, the second of which led to a Bluestone throwing error into left field that allowed him to bounce up and spring home for the first run. Andrew Harcum then singled home Reid Chenault who had reached on a walk.
To start the next inning, the Bulldogs turned to Coleman Duty on the mound, and he locked down Bluestone for the next six innings. He allowed just four total baserunners while striking out six during that stretch.
“Our goal was to split time with Tanner (Bradshaw) and Coleman anyway we just hoped it would be a more even split, but Coleman was very efficient tonight,” Farkas said.
Meanwhile things continued to come apart for Bluestone as Goochland tied the game with a three-run second inning where all three runs were walked in after Goochland loaded the bases with no outs.
With the game even at 5-5, Goochland wasted little time in taking the lead, with a Colby Noel base hit bringing in two runs in the third. That became the game-winning hit, with Goochland adding one insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Harcum that scored Carter.
