Jefferson District rivals Western Albemarle and Monticello split two regular-season meetings in girls lacrosse this year, so it seemed only appropriate that the teams went into halftime with the score tied.
The game remained close well into the second half, but in the end it was the Mustangs who did just enough to come away with a 13-11 win on their home field in the Charlottesville Conference final.
Monticello got three goals each from Summer Larese and Paige McGlothin and a pair apiece from Makenzie Trainor, Bailey Mincer and Morgan Rose in the victory, using a 3-0 spurt over nearly eight minutes late in the second half to eke out the win. After Western’s Ellie Allen, who had a hat trick of her own, scored two straight in a three-minute span to pull Western to within 10-9 at the 10:30 mark, the Mustangs made their move.
First, Mincer found the back of the net on an individual effort with 7:45 left for an 11-9 lead. Less than a minute later McGothlin took a pass from Larese and gave Monticello a little more breathing room before finishing the run by feeding Rose with 4:40 left.
“This game, I think we remembered the first time we played them, and we played them from a 0-0 point,” Larese said. “We had each beaten each other, so we played like it was the first time.”
The Warriors didn’t go quietly, as Sammie Magargee, who led her team with four goals and three assists, put in two quick ones past MHS goalie Carly Harris to cut the lead in half with 1:45 remaining. But the Mustangs gained possession following the final goal and never lost it, running out the clock to claim the conference title.
“It feels really good to get the win when it finally counts,” Mincer said.
Early on, it looked like the Mustangs would run away with the game, jumping out to a 4-1 lead over the opening eight minutes. Western would not let that happen, using a 4-0 run punctuated by Magargee’s first goal of the game to take its first lead with 14:43 left before halftime. Monticello evened things four-and-a-half minutes later on a goal from Larese before Rose broke the tie with her first goal at the 8:53 mark. The teams traded goals from there leading to a 7-7 deadlock at the half.
Monticello started quickly again after halftime, scoring the first three goals of the second half before Allen’s run for Western, setting up the Mustangs’ final push.
“At halftime we talked about coming out fast and getting a couple goals for the lead and being really safe with the ball,” Mincer said. “I think we did that really well.”
Goalie Hamilton Ibbeken registered 19 saves for Western on the evening, keeping the game close against a relentless Monticello offense.
“The score could have been a lot different had she not been in the cage,” Western head coach Tara Hohenshelt said. “She’s been like this for us all year. We’re very fortunate to have her back there.”
