Shootout Success

Charlottesville caught Monticello off guard with a big-time first half, and at the break the Black Knights had a one-point advantage. But as several other opponents have discovered, maintaining that advantage over four quarters when Isaac Robinson is running the ball is a tall task.

While CHS continued to score, Monticello’s explosive offense and Robinson in particular found another gear after the break and managed to pull ahead long enough with 28 fourth quarter points to hold onto a 54-40 victory over Charlottesville in yet another shootout victory for the Mustangs.

As has quickly become customary this season, Robinson powered the Monticello offense, piling up 214 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries. Robinson averaged 7.2 yards per carry and passed the 1,000-yard mark for the season.

The two teams punted just three times between them with two from Charlottesville and one from Monticello as the points piled up.

After the Black Knights held a 13-12 halftime lead, the two squads swapped touchdowns during the third quarter and the early part of the fourth. But Monticello finally started stringing together points, with a 69-yard Denzel Terry punt return for a touchdown capping the spurt. Monticello was up 47-26 after the Terry score.

Robinson’s 44-yard scoring sprint, his longest of the night, came with three minutes left in the game and helped seal the victory for Monticello. Fullback T.J. Tillery had a 31-yard touchdown run to provide a change of pace in the run game.

Jhalil Mosley only had to throw it nine times, but he connected on four of them, including a pair of touchdowns, one a 79-yard toss to Sam Patterson.

Charlottesville’s offense continued to develop, with Wynter Warren leading the ground game with 43 yards on 12 carries while Mason Sherry ran for 30 yards and a pair of touchdowns, then threw for another 218 yards and three touchdowns.

Diamante Scott has emerged as Sherry’s favorite deep threat, posting 105 yards on three catches, with two of the going for touchdowns.

Chris Thurston provided Charlottesville with a dynamic presence in the ground game, averaging 5.6 yards per carry and hauled in 72 yards on four catches.

Charlottesville will try and bounce back Thursday against Western Albemarle while Monticello will step out of Jefferson District play with another home tilt against Turner Ashby.
