Shaking things up

Monticello’s young girls lacrosse squad picked up a monster win Tuesday night at home.

The Mustangs knocked off Albemarle 16-14 on the strength of a second half rally and a huge scoring performance from Bailey Mincer.

Mincer, a junior, piled up 11 points with eight goals and a trio of assists while also giving the Mustangs a huge boost on the draw. Mackenzie Trainor also registered a hat trick for the Mustangs and played a huge role in a key early second half run.

Albemarle scored right out of the gate in second half to put Monticello down by five goals with 24:23 left to play in the game, but the Mustangs refused to roll over, reeling off a five-goal run where Trainor scored all three of her goals. The run evened the game at 9-9.

Rebecca Mendelsohn and Julia Hartman answered immediately, pushing Albemarle back out to an 11-9 lead with goals coming within less than a minute of each other.

After trading goals, the Patriots were up 13-11 with under 15 minutes to play. That’s When Mincer took back over, scoring twice to tie the game, Albemarle again answered, but they couldn’t find that same counterpunch in the final six minutes as Mincer, Caroline Firer and Sydney Mincer all scored goals over that stretch to boost the Mustangs ahead and secure the win. Sydney Mincer’s goal off a Chloe Brannock assist with 1:10 left was the final nail in the coffin for the Patriots.

Larese and Firer each had two goals and an assist for Monticello. Evie Maxwell also notched an assist.

For Albemarle, Mendelsohn had a huge game of her own with three goals and three assists. Lizzy and Carolyn Chapman both also posted hat tricks while Hartman had two goals and an assist. Ryann Murray and Heidi Karweik had a goal and assist apiece.

Monticello will try and keep the momentum going Friday when they host Western Albemarle, a squad that fell in triple overtime to the Patriots last week. Albemarle will try and bounce back against Patrick Henry Wednesday night on short rest.
