Powhatan tames Monticello

Monticello rolled in their first two contests, but the Mustangs got a bit of a wakeup call Friday night as Powhatan tagged the Mustangs for 44 points in a 44-20 win, jumping out to a 37-point lead over the first three quarters.

Powhatan’s balanced offense rolled up 330 yards in the win, including a 94-yard receiving outing by Joshua Ingram and a solid rushing performance from Dion Berry and Raymond Brown who combined for 103 yards on 24 carries.

Powhatan struck first on a 42-yard catch by Ingram from quarterback Kurt Taylor, but the Indians really took control with a, 13-play, 94-yard drive in the second quarter that chewed up more than seven minutes. Brown capped the march with a 7-yard touchdown.

A botched snap on a punt with 39 seconds left in the half forced Monticello into a deeper hole as Powhatan capitalized on another Taylor touchdown pass, this time to Phillip Schoeffel from 12 yards out.

Monticello’s offense didn’t get into gear until the fourth quarter when Powhatan brought in a number of reserves, but Jesse Ayres finished with 144 yards and three touchdowns on the night.
