Patriots survive and advance

Back on April 1, Albemarle High’s baseball team was sitting at just a game above .500 and was still searching for an identity.

While the Patriots have had their ups and downs since, the ship has stayed relatively steady in the last month and a half. That trend continued Monday night when the Patriots, seeded fourth in the Commonwealth District tournament, knocked out Stafford 6-2 in the CD quarterfinals.

Albemarle’s Joe Burris threw a complete game for the win while catcher Joey Varaksa went 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs. Kristian Aasen posted a 2-for-2 night with a walk and two RBIs. Timmy Aker checked in with another mult-hit effort with a 2-for-3 outing.

The Patriots now face No. 1-seeded Colonial Forge Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the Commonwealth semifinals.
