Mustangs blow past Flucos

In a program that’s had as storied of a 15-year start to its history as one could probably hope, Monticello’s current edition is already a historic squad a little more than halfway through 2013.

The Mustangs rolled 48-0 Friday night to move to 6-0, the best start in school history for the football program.

A week after losing Kyree Koonce for the rest of the year to a broken lower leg, Monticello’s offense looked different but picked up right where they left off, with James St. Hill throwing for four touchdowns and 190 yards on the night to compliment Darian Bates and T.J. Tillery’s explosiveness in the run game.

Bates rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries while Tillery went for 65 and a score on his 10 touches.

Josh Malm’s two catches for 90 yards led all receivers and both receptions went for touchdowns, the longest from 59 yards out. Tyler Wagner found a way to make an impact in the passing game with two catches for 45 yards, both of which also went for touchdowns. Alex McNair had three catches for 56 yards on the night.

Four different Fluvanna players threw passes but the squad mustered just a 4 for 18 night for 42 yards through the air. Running back Marcus Jackson led the way offensively for the Flucos with 53 yards on 13 carries.

Monticello will put that program best start on the line Friday at home against Western Albemarle in a battle of unbeatens while the Flucos engage with Louisa County in a rematch of an incredible 2012 contest that gave Fluvanna its first win in a decade over the Lions.
