Monticello makes quick work of TA

Monticello’s offense wasted little time getting things going Friday against Turner Ashby.

By halftime the Mustangs already had 514 yards of total offense and a 42-point lead while rolling to a 49-14 road win against the Knights.

Kyree Koonce struck twice in the span of one minute and 42 seconds in the first quarter, once from 47 yards out and then again from 66 yards out. Koonce was electric again this week, with 144 yards on just seven touches, a whopping 20.6 yards per carry.

The return of T.J. Tillery from injury also bolstered the already explosive offense as he ripped off 119 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Throw in Tyler Wagner’s 91 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries and Darian Bates’ 41 yards on seven carries and Monticello appears to have found a formula that works in the ground game.

James St. Hill was productive again at quarterback too, going 6 for 13 for 149 yards to five difference receivers. Josh Malm raced 58 yards for a touchdown on his lone catch of the night, while Tillery had a 42-yard catch and Alex McNair hauled in a touchdown.

From there, the defensive clamped down, holding Turner Ashby in check on the scoreboard, surrendering just one touchdown in the second half as the Mustangs’ offense slowed down.

The Mustangs (3-0) hit the road again next week when they take on Powhatan to open Jefferson District play.
