Monticello hammers Charlottesville

What Monticello is going to do isn’t complicated — you’re going to get a heavy, near relentless dose of Jesse Ayres every week, win or lose. A week after rushing for 162 yards in a loss to Western, Friday night’s output had to feel a whole lot better for the senior tailback.

Ayres piled up 255 yards and five touchdowns on just 18 carries to lead the Mustangs to a 45-13 runaway victory over Charlottesville.

The Black Knights didn’t get on the board until late in the third when Chris Thurston broke loose for a 40-yard touchdown. It was too little too late.

Ayres got the scoring started early in the first with a 19-yard jaunt into the end zone, then scored another in the first frame before posting a pair of second quarter touchdowns. In between those rushing scores, Jhalil Mosley found Tyler Moneymaker for a 23-yard catch and run touchdown late in the first quarter. Monticello was up 33-0 at the break.

Mosley was nearly perfect on the night on completion percentage, completing eight of 11 passes for 106 yards and the touchdown to Moneymaker. But with Ayres carrying the load effectively, the Mustangs didn’t have to go to the air much.

Monticello faces a tall task next week at home when they go toe-to-toe with Louisa County.
