Jefferson District basketball quarters roundup 2.11.14

Western’s boys basketball team made quick work of Orange County in the opening round of the Jefferson District tournament as the No. 2-seeded Warriors rolled 70-52 past the No. 7 Hornets Monday.

Sam Chisholm carried the Warriors underneath with 26 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks as the senior hit 12 of his 15 attempts from the field.

Chase Stokes also posted a double double with 11 points and 10 boards while point guard Eli Sumpter checked in with seven assists.

With the victory, the Warriors set up a fourth and final installment of the Western/Albemarle matchup where Western will be looking for a fourth victory over the Patriots. Western and the No. 3-seeded Patriots will lock up at 8 p.m. at Monticello Tuesday night. Orange now sets its sights on the Conference 16 tournament that starts next week.

Monticello’s Shephard scores 1,000th career point in rout

Monticello’s Molly Shephard needed 25 points to reach 1,000 for her career.

The junior forward got 26 and in the process sparked top-seeded Monticello to a 69-27 win over Louisa County in the opening round of the Jefferson District tournament. The victory sends the Mustangs to the semifinals to face Fluvanna County Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Albemarle High school.

Meghan Comer also got in on the scoring act with 16 points including a pair of 3-pointers. Reagan Roberts chipped in nine points in the win.

Louisa got 10 points each out of Yasmin Tyler and Breon Washington. They’ll get another chance to hit the court in the Conference 23 tournament next week.

Charlottesville girls hold off Western

Charlottesville High’s girls basketball team didn’t light up the scoreboard when they clashed with defensive-minded Western Albemarle Monday night, but the Black Knights scored enough to pick up a 31-19 victory over the Warriors.

Kendall Ballard finished with eight points while Raylaja Waller led the way with 10 on the night. The Black Knights will take on Albemarle in a third meeting between the two squads at 7 p.m.

Western will compete in the Conference 29 tournament next week.

Albemarle girls blow past Orange

A huge second quarter from Albemarle girls basketball’s balanced offense sparked the Patriots to a 55-28 victory over sixth-seeded Orange Monday night in the opening round of the Jefferson District tournament.

Albemarle, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, poured in 24 second quarter points to build a 33-16 lead before the break. The Patriots reeled off a 13-0 run to start the second frame, and six different players scored during the quarter.

KK Barbour led the attack with 17 points on the night while Felicia Garrison chipped in with eight points.

The Patriots will face No. 2 Charlottesville in the semifinals at 7 p.m. at Albemarle Tuesday night while Orange gets ready for the Conference 16 tournament.

Other Jefferson District scores

Charlottesville’s boys squad beat Louisa County 84-46. … Fluvanna’s girls squad beat Powhatan 33-29. …
