Eagles fall in VIC quarterfinals

Covenant’s baseball team knew it was matching strength with Matt Shobe on the hill for the Eagles and Trevor Norman taking the mound for Fishburne in the VIC quarterfinals Tuesday night in Stuarts Draft.

But Norman got the better of the matchup as Fishburne picked up a 3-1 win in a tight, hard-fought game. Norman recorded 15 strikeouts and limited the Eagles to just two hits, though Covenant drew eight walks. Turning those baserunners into runs proved difficult though as Norman put the clamps down.

Shobe threw well too striking out eight in more than four innings of work, leaving the game with two outs and two on in the fifth inning and the contest tied at 1-1. Fishburne took advantage in that moment with Qua’Sean Napier blasting a curling triple deep into the outfield. That cleared the bases and plated a pair of runs for the Caissons.

That was all Norman needed to put away the win. He struck out five in the last two innings to lift Fishburne to the victory.

Tyler Mahone had the Eagles’ lone RBI, drawing a bases loaded walk to bring in Sam Lepage, who reached on a walk earlier in the inning.

The loss eliminates Covenant from the VIC tournament. They’ll learn their VISAA Division II tournament fate later this week.
