Covenant softball takes LIS title

Covenant’s softball team pulled it off. Again.

The Eagles beat St. Gertrude 5-1 Friday afternoon for the program’s second straight League of Independent Schools championship.

Covenant took control of a deadlocked game in the third inning by scratching out a run and then kept the pressure on with a run in the fifth and two more in sixth while pitcher Lindsey Chaney locked St. Gertrude down in the circle.

Chaney struck out eight and jumpstarted a key double play that went through first baseman Cameron Wright and finished with Alexis Steljes at catcher. Chaney scattered five hits and four walks as the Eagles pulled off the win.

Steljes and Jenna Conrades each posted 2 for 3 nights, with Steljes registering an RBI. Charlotte Hendrix, Aliece Carney and Soobin Han also drove in runs. A base hit by Emily Maupin in the sixth helped spark the insurance runs for the Eagles.

Covenant will move on to the VISAA softball tournament. They were ranked No. 4 in the latest Division 2 poll issued May 6.
