Covenant rolls past STAB

Covenant’s young guns are getting the job done right now for the Eagles’ tennis team, and that continued Monday as Covenant picked up a 6-3 victory over St. Anne’s-Belfield.

The Eagles, the defending VISSA Division 2 state champs, are leaning on a slew of young players in 2011, including last year’s Scrimmage Play newcomer of the year Jack Thomas at the No.1 slot. The unit is already making a solid splash.

Freshmen Thomas and Sam Adamson led the way at the top of the ladder with 10-2 victories over Scott Cho and Jon Pina for STAB.

Then William Rose, another freshman grabbed a win at the third spot and senior captain Will Gibson knocked off Walker Neil of STAB at the fourth spot 106.

STAB broke back however, with Will Hantzmor and Luke Ignaczek grabbing 10-2 and 10-3 victories at No. 4 and No. 5. That put Covenant up 4-2 heading into doubles play.

In doubles, Thomas And Adamson combined for an 8-1 win, then Rose and Gibson teamed up for an 8-4 victory at No. 2.

STAB is now 4-2 on the season while Covenant moves to 7-2 with a 3-0 mark in the Virginia Independent Conference.
