Basketball roundup 2.19.14

Already up by five, St. Anne’s-Belfield’s girls basketball squad exploded in the second quarter en route to a 69-31 victory over St. Gertrude in the League of Independent Schools semifinals.

STAB, seeded No. 1 in the LIS tournament, put together a 27-point second quarter to build a 37-12 halftime lead over No. 4-seeded St. Gertrude.

Ashley Taylor filled up the stat sheet for the Saints, pouring in 19 points to go with six rebounds and six steals. Brianna Tinsley finished with 12 points, four rebounds, five steals and two assists while Mailynn Steppe scored 14 points to round out the bulk of the Saints’ scoring.

N.K. Ilang had nine rebounds on the night.

With the win, STAB moves to the LIS final where the Saints will take on third-seeded Collegiate at home at 5 p.m.

Orange boys fall in Conference 16

Halifax exploded past Orange County’s boys basketball team Tuesday night in the opening round of the Conference 16 tournament, rolling 82-28 over the Hornets.

J’Air Rawlings led the Hornets with 11 points. Kameron Hill had six points on the night.

Trelanne Johnson led the Comets with 22 points. Tavion Petty had 15 points while James Burden checked in with 13 points. Keyshawn Johnson also got into double figures with 11.

Halifax will host Patrick Henry-Ashland in the Conference 16 final Friday.

Monticello girls beat Stuarts Draft

Monticello’s girls squad didn’t get the start it wanted Tuesday night, struggling to just a one-point first half lead against Stuarts Draft.

But the No. 2 seeded Mustangs took control of the Conference 29 quarterfinal after the break, holding the Lady Cougars to just two second half field goals and 10 total points as Monticello escaped 46-26 at home.

Meghan Comer led the Mustangs’ offensive attack with 24 points while Molly Shephard scored 11. Nine of Shephard’s 11 came in the second half while Comer scored 16 of her 24 after halftime.

Monticello will head to Stuarts Draft Thursday to take on Broadway in the Conference 29 semifinals.

Spotswood girls roll past Western

A banged-up Western Albemarle girls squad limped into the Conference 29 tournament Tuesday night against defending state champion Spotswood.

The Blazers made quick work of Western, rolling 71-14 over the Warriors.

Taylor Dodson had 18 to lead Spotswood while Elizabeth Dofflemyer finished with 17 on the night.

Spotswood advances to the Conference 29 semifinals where they’ll take on Fort Defiance at 6 p.m. at Stuarts Draft Thursday.
