Basketball roundup 1.11.14

Monticello’s girls basketball didn’t have their most productive offensive night, but Molly Shephard and Reagan Roberts got the job done in the post to lift the Mustangs past Charlottesville 50-37.

Roberts finished with 10 points and 17 rebounds while Shephard finished with 19 points on the night for the Mustangs. That edge in the post was enough to ignite Monticello or a night where they were plagued by turnovers despite jumping out to a 17-10 lead in the first quarter.

Meghan Comer finished with nine points and Cierra Hall chipped in six on the night.

Charlottesville stayed within range all night but couldn’t crack the Mustangs. Kendall Ballard led the Black Knights with nine points while Alaijah Ragland had eight points on the night including a pair of 3-pointers.

Charlottesville will try and bounce back with a tough home matchup against Orange County Tuesday while the Mustangs get a break before hosting Western Albemarle next Friday.

Buckingham boys beat Cumberland

If you’re going to beat Buckingham’s boys basketball team, you’ve got to keep Justin Ayres off the boards. That’s much easier said than done, as Cumberland found out Friday night in a 59-48 win by the Knights.

Ayres hauled in 22 rebounds to go with his 10 points, three steals and three blocks to ignite Buckingham, pushing his average to 17.0 rebounds per game through six contests for the Knights.

Leon Ragland also had a big night with 13 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and three assists. Andre Boatwright had 10 points and four rebounds while B.J. Gough finished with nine points and four rebounds.

The Hornets host Charlottesville Tuesday night at home.

Orange girls fall to Powhatan

It took three overtimes, but Powhatan finally managed to shake off Orange County Friday night, with the Indians winning 68-65.

The Hornets couldn’t slow down Powhatan’s Timesha Morris who rang up 34 points and finished 10 for 18 from the charity stripe. Monty Johnson finished with 18 to lead the Indians’ backcourt.

Rebecca Harvey had a huge game for the Hornets with 21 points, hitting 8 of her 10 free throws. Markiana Smith finished with 16 on the night while Elisha Richardson had 12 points. Kiani Hudgens checked in with eight from the point guard spot.

Orange will try and rebound on the road against Charlottesville Tuesday.
