Western Albemarle’s no huddle set is the most significant wrinkle that new head coach Ed Redmond has added to the mix.
And it’s clearly getting it done.
Friday night against Spotswood, the Warriors were able to turn it on late in the game, blowing past a worn-out Spotswood squad that led by a touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter. Western picked up a 42-21 victory 28 points in the final frame and moved to 4-0 on the year.
The win sets up a matchup of unbeatens in the Jefferson District between Monticello and Western Friday night.
The Warriors jumped out to a 14-0 lead on the strength of a Kent Henry rushing touchdown and a pass from Henry to Nic Drapanas for a short score.
Spotswood reeled off 21 straight points though, which set up the Warriors explosive come-from-behind fourth. Henry hit Drapanas twice more for touchdowns before the defense took over to close it out. Daniel Kuzjak and Patrick Maupin each picked off passes and took them to the house for touchdowns.
Henry finished with 54 yards on the ground and another 201 through the air. He was efficient, going 16 for 24 with just one interception.
Kuzjak had four catches for 33 yards but drew a lot of attention and opened things up for Drapanas (six catches for 99 yards and the three touchdowns), Isaiah Cowan (four catches for 31 yards) and Trevor Harlow (two catches for 38 yards). Justin Haws set the pace in the run game with 65 yards on 11 touches.
The Warriors and Mustangs will lock up Friday at Monticello, game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
