Western run game ignites Warriors

Western Albemarle held a slim, 4-point lead at the half after handing Waynesboro a touchdown on a second quarter pick six.

That didn’t last long in the second half. The Warriors exploded late in the third quarter and by the time there was about five minutes left in the third, Western was rolling, leading by 17 en route to a 45-14 victory over the Little Giants.

An effective run game led by quarterback Kent Henry spearheaded the explosive third quarter. Henry rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns on just nine touches, an 11.3 yard per carry average. Tanner Knight had a pair of touchdowns on the ground too while sophomore Nic Drapanas, in his second week of action at tailback, rushed seven times for 53 yards. Backup quarterback Devin Long and all-district center Zack Robb scored the other two rushing touchdowns, with Long plunging in from a yard out as a goal line package fullback.

Henry was solid through the air, going 8-for-17 for 142 yards, with Austin Ellis’ 101 yards receiving leading the way for the Warriors on just six catches.

Pete Barber connected on a 45-yard field goal in the first half for the Warriors for a 3-0 lead.

Western faces off with Fluvanna County next Friday at home.
