Western girls slip past Monticello

Jefferson District, meet Raven Ward.

In Western Albemarle’s 51-35 victory over Monticello, Ward, a solid post contributor for the Warriors the last two years, exploded for 21 points and 18 rebounds against the Mustangs.

The win gives the Warriors a fourth straight win and hands the Mustangs a seventh-straight loss. It also sets up a battle Friday night for the Warriors with Charlottesville that could eventually determine the Jefferson District’s No. 2-seed in the tournament. Fluvanna appears permanently entrenched at the top spot as every JD team has two or more losses outside of the unbeaten Flucos.

Virginia Carew had a big game for the Warriors with 11 points, six rebounds and three steals. Mady Baker chipped in with seven points and three boards and Carolyn Schneller finished with six points and four rebounds.

Western is slated to take on St. Anne’s tonight before the rematch with Charlottesville. The Black Knights won the teams’ first meeting 41-34.
