Western girls pick up steam, knock off Charlottesville

Sydney Fewell has put together some solid scoring streaks during her career at Western Albemarle, but this might be her best stretch yet.

Just two days after pouring in 19 points against Louisa County, Fewell repeated the feat, scoring 19 again Thursday night to help spark Western to a 34-33 victory over Charlottesville High. It’s the latest turn in a wild Jefferson District girls race.

With Fewell getting going and the defense ramping up the intensity, the Warriors were up by 10 after three quarters against the Black Knights. Charlottesville managed just 15 point over those three frames.

But the Warriors had to withstand a furious late rally by the Black Knights who pulled within striking distance with an 18-point fourth. Still, CHS only managed to cut the lead to a single point when London Todd, who had 12 points, hit an uncontested 3-pointer as time expired.

Monique Perkins chipped in eight points for the Black Knights.

In addition to Fewell’s 19, Mady Baker chipped in six points to bolster the Warriors. Emily Marbury, Alora Henry, Kathryn Crickenberger and Emma Kulow combined for 13 steals with Marbury swiping the ball four times while the other three had a trio of steals each. Bridget Shaffrey came up with seven rebounds and six total blocks.

Charlottesville will try and bounce back tonight against Harrisonburg on the road. Next Tuesday, Western heads to Palmyra to take on Fluvanna County, who lost a hard-fought game to Monticello Thursday.
