Western girls lacrosse handles St. Catherine’s

The Western Albemarle’s girls lacrosse team successfully avenged last season’s loss to St. Catherine’s as they won on Tuesday night, 18-11.

The Warriors got off a hot start with three goals to open up the game. St. Catherine’s slowly worked a 3-goal deficit down to one, but Western padded it’s lead shortly thereafter with a spurt of four goals to close out of the first half with a 10-5 advantage.

Little changed in the second half, as the Warriors only widened the margin.

Abby Wheeler scored seven times for Western — her second straight game with at least six goals. Jordan Haws had a seven-point night as she picked up a hat trick while also registering four assists. Kellen Haley also finished the game with a hat trick and wound up with one assist. Jeannette Fellows, Anna Liebowitz and Ellen Shaffrey gave Western six different players to have multiple point outings.

Shaffrey was dominant in on faceoffs as she won five draw controls. Haws and Fellows each won three.

After a light day on Saturday against Salem, Christine Fortner finally saw some action in net and the goalkeeper held her own by stopping 12 of the Saints’ 25 shots.

The Warriors (4-1) get the next 10 days off before resuming play with St. Stephen’s-St. Agnes on Saturday April 10.
