Western Albemarle’s girls lacrosse team’s offense is just a little overwhelming. Maybe a lot overwhelming. Everything just happens so fast.
Now, because of that unit and a reliable defense, the defending state champs are headed back to the state tournament.
The Warriors kept the steamroller going Wednesday with a 20-6 win over Freedom to earn a spot in the Region II final and the state tournament.
After a strong defensive stand off the opening draw, Western scored its first two goals in the first four minutes of play, and while Freedom managed a pair of quartet of first half goals, Western was in complete control with the high octane offense pouring in 13 goals before the break.
Ellen Shaffrey, as usual, led the way with an eight-goal effort to go with a pair of assists. The senior standout also had nine total draw controls. As has been the case of late, Peyton Brandt and Anna Liebowitz triggered the offense, this time with four assists each. Jeanette Fellows poured in four goals o the night with while Bridget Shaffrey had a well-rounded effort with two goals and two assists. Mady Baker had two goals too.
Linda Hexter stepped up big with five draw controls on the night.
Christine Fortner turned away six shots on the night for Freedom while Amber Kim scored four goals in what became the Dulles District squad’s final game of the season.
Western is 16-2 on the season and moves onto the Region II final. They’ll play Woodgrove at Woodgrove (based on a coin toss) Friday at 6 p.m.
