Western girls fall to Fort Defiance

Western Albemarle’s girls basketball went down early and despite a strong second half couldn’t claw back against Fort Defiance Wednesday night, falling 45-41.

The Warriors trailed by five in the first quarter and by nine at the half and at the end of the third. Despite holding Fort Defiance to just 17 points in the second half Western couldn’t get enough going offensively to overcome the deficit.

Devon Byrd and Reagan Uhler each had 14 points for Fort Defiance.

Mady Baker led the way for the Warriors with 11 points, three rebounds and two steals. Bridgett Shaffrey had another big night on the boards with 11 rebounds and came up with six points and two steals. Point guard Sydney Fewell finished with eight points, three assists and a trio of steals.

Rachel Cooke had seven points.

Western had 13 team steals in the impressive defensive effort.

The Warriors host Spotswood Saturday afternoon in a rematch of Western’s 53-32 loss last Thursday. The Warriors got eight points, 10 rebounds and four blocks from Shaffrey against the Blazers, but couldn’t overcome a 17-point outing by Spotswood’s Bailey Williams and a 15-point performance from Taylor Dodson.
