Western girls DQ themselves from JD tourney

In a case of blowing the whistle on itself, Western Albemarle’s girls basketball team is withdrawing from the Jefferson District tournament and forfeiting it’s 65-25 win over Goochland in the quarterfinals.

The Warriors already secured a Region II birth by virtue of winning the JD regular season title. They will host a Region II quarterfinal game on February 22nd.

The move comes after Western coach Kris Wright become aware that a player from the junior varisty ranks that also played in the JV championship entered the game against the Bulldogs in the final minute of play.

Warriors athletic director Steve Heon released the following statement via email.

“I want to credit Head Coach Kris Wright for recognizing this violation and doing the right thing of bringing this to the administration’s attention. The violation involved is a basketball specific rule of which we were unaware. The team is understandably disappointed they will not be able to compete in the remainder of the Jefferson District Tournament.  They will now turn their attention to preparing for the Region II tournament.”

With the forfeit, Goochland will now play Monticello in the JD semifinals on Wednesday.
