Western baseball rolls past Fort Defiance

Western Albemarle’s baseball team got off on the right foot Saturday afternoon, coasting to an 11-0 victory over Fort Defiance in the Warriors’ season opener.

Jack Maynard was back on the mound in the same form that earned him first team All-Jefferson District honors as a pitcher last season. Maynard struck out five and allowed just two hits and a single walk. Maynard helped his own cause with a pair of hits and an RBI.

Henry Kreienbaum posted a monster day at the plate with three hits including a double and two RBIs. Logan Ebanks was also solid with two hits and three RBIs.

Harrison Lund posted an RBI single in his first varsity at bat.

The Warriors built a 5-0 lead in the first inning and tacked on a run in the third before exploding for five more in the bottom of the fourth to help invoke the slaughter rule against the Indians.

Western will take on Waynesboro Wednesday before jumping into Jefferson District play with Powhatan at home Thursday at 6 p.m.
