Dillon Via put together a strong all-around performance Wednesday night in Western Albemarle baseball’s season opener, as the Warriors rolled 8-1 over Nelson County.
Via paired a 3-for-3, 3 RBI outing at the plate with four strong innings on the mound. Via allowed just one hit and registered six strikeouts.
The Warriors also got two hits each from three other players, Mitchell Parks, Noah Carter and Adam Frazier. Chris Madison relieved Via and struck out six in three innings for the save.
Western scored a pair of runs on a scary play in the second inning when Nelson shortstop Jordan Wooten collided with second baseman Forest Lipscomb while diving for a ball. Wooten was removed from the field via ambulance, but reportedly had feeling in all his extremities.
Nelson managed just a couple of hits, with Shawn Jones and Jake Mustain coming up with those.
Nelson takes on Brookville at 5 p.m. Monday on the road. Western takes on Albemarle on the road Friday.
