Weather can’t stop Warriors girls lacrosse from thumping James River

Though there were delays on the road, the ride home was not a disappointment. Under an active sky that featured everything from violent lighting to jaw-dropping rainbows, the Western Albemarle girls lacrosse team returned from Richmond on Monday night with an 18-5 win over James River.

Although the Rapids drew first blood three minutes into the game, Western scored nine of the next 11 goals and took a 9-3 lead into the second half.

Abby Wheeler and Ellen Shaffery each compiled six points with the Vanderbilt bound Wheeler registering six goals while Shaffrey had 5 scores and an assist. Janie Day Whitworth came away with a pair of goals and assists. Jordan Haws and Jeanette Fellows each scored once and had a pair of helpers. Kellen Haley and Peyton Brandy gave Western seven players with at least two points.

Defensively, Cora Letteri had two ground balls and a take away. Madeline DuCharme also had a pair of ground balls. Christine Fortner stopped a season high 10 shots and picked up a ground ball.

Western (9-2, 4-0 Jefferson) travels to Albemarle on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
