Warriors win all three phases, blast Spotswood

A little balanced offensive attack, some solid special teams play and a sterling defensive effort makes for a pretty effective and almost foolproof way to win a high school football game. Western pieced that together Friday night and rolled 35-6 over Spotswood in another out-of-district clash for the Warriors.

The victory moves Western to 2-2 on the year and ends a two-game skid against Liberty-Bealeton and Fort Defiance.

Kent Henry put together an impressive game with 111 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and 202 yards and two more scores through the air. The sophomore continues to prove he’s sharp beyond his years too, completing 13 of 18 passes for a whopping 72 percent completion rate.

He got a lot of help in the ground game from Tanner Knight who picked up 70 yards, with Western’s zone read scheme finding a rhythm with the two-headed attack.

Nick Drapanas and Austin Ellis served as Henry’s favorite targets in the passing game, with Ellis’ 109 yards leading the receiving corps. Darpanas hauled in 78 yards on seven catches including the two touchdowns for the Warriors.

A pair of big plays on kickoff coverage set the table for Western’s offense to pile up points. Western forced a fumble near the end of the first half that enabled the Warriors to score back-to-back and take a 21-6 lead at the break. Then Ellis stripped the ball from the returner on the opening kick of the second half, allowing Western to grab a 28-6 lead 20 seconds into the quarter.
