Warriors roll past Eagles in girls lacrosse

A day after the Western Albemarle boys took down Covenant, the Warriors’ girls lacrosse team gave their school a sweep of the Eagles as they picked up a 22-7 road victory.

Western jumped out to a 5-goal lead in the first half. But the Warriors defense, behind the play of Erin Jordan and Anna Krueger stole the show in the second frame, holding Covenant to just one goal while the offense matched their first half totals.

Ellen Shaffrey and Abby Wheeler led the offensive attack with six goals each while Jordan Haws and Jeanette Fellows scored three and two respective goals. Haws, Anna Lebiebowitz and Kellen Haley’s passing help to facilitate the offense as the three each tallied three assists.

Haws and Shaffrey got the job done in the faceoff department, combing to win 11 draw controls.

In net, Christine Fortner stopped eight of the 17 shots she faced.

Western will host St. Anne’s-Belfield on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
