Volleyball roundup: Albemarle, Monticello and Western all pick up wins

It’s been a long time since Albemarle and Colonial Forge got together for just a quick match. While the Patriots were tested in their first set against their longtime rivals, once the broke through they were able to cruise to their first 3-0 sweep of the Eagles since 2002 to remain unbeaten, 25-23, 25-10, 25-18.

After a back-and-forth first half of game one, Albemarle took a 6-point lead at 17-11. However, Forge won six of the next 10 points and knotted the game up at 23. Thanks to a service error followed by a tip from Sarah Woods, the Patriots quashed the comeback to take the 1-0 lead.

Albemarle carried the momentum over into the second set as it rolled to a 13-3 lead behind six service points from Colleen Marshall. There would be no late rally from the Eagles this go around and the Patriots quickly wrapped things up to go up 2-0 behind the play of Chelsea Woodfolk.

After taking a 4-point lead early, Albemarle was able to keep a comfortable distance the rest of the way through to close out the match.

Woodfolk had 11 kills on the night to lead the offense. Hannah Deal added six kills. Sarah Woods had three kills to go with her three blocks. Libero Caroline Porco had 16 digs with Colleen Marshall adding eight.

Albemarle (11-0, 7-0) hosts its Showcase Tournament on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Monticello bests Powhatan in five

The Mustangs passed their first big test of their Jefferson District slate, albeit in dramatic fashion. Hosting the JD-runner up last year in Powhatan, Monticello was able to jump out to solid start, watch the Indians race back and then find a way to win the fifth set for a 3-2 win, 25-23, 25-14, 12-25, 11-25, 15-11.

Monticello had to dig out of a hole to claim the 1-0 lead. The Mustangs trailed in the first set 21-16 but finished the first set with a 9-2 run to snatch the advantage. In the second set, the Mustangs trailed for just the first few points of the game before taking a 9-4 lead and consistently padding it to set up the possibility of a sweep.

Powhatan decided to make it interesting from that point forward. The Indians built an early 4-point lead to begin the third set but Monticello was able to tie things up at 10-10. Things went south for the Mustangs from their though as Powhatan raced out to a 15-2 run to win its first game of the night.

A 10-1 start for the Indians in game two put them more than enough out in front to win the fourth set comfortably as Monticello never got closer than within seven points of the lead.

That set the table for the pivotal fifth set. There Monticello shook off the last two games and put together a 9-3 to open. Powhatan got within three points at both 10-7 and 13-10, but nothing better than that and as such the Mustangs were able to finally put away the win.

Charlotte Devine and Lyra Payne led the offense for Monticello. Devine finished with a team best 10 kills while Payne was close behind with eight. Kaona Ayres added four kills and had a pair of blocks. Setter Allie Perez finished with 22 asissts. Devine, Perez and libero Trystam Carr each had big defensive efforts. Devine had 10 digs while Perez and Carr each contributed seven.

Monticello (7-4, 2-0) will participate in the Albemarle Showcase Tournament on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

Western sweeps Charlottesville

Playing for the first time in 12 days since the Albemarle Invitational, Western Albemarle picked up a 3-0 victory on the road against Charlottesville to open up Jefferson District play, 25-12, 25-16, 25-14.

The Warriors offense was paced by Maggie Spindel’s 11 kills and Abi Wagner’s 14 assists. Marina Clark picked up 12 digs. Both Abi Wagner and Emmie Wittmer were able to tally seven service points a piece.

Western (8-1, 1-0) will host Louisa County on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
