STAB baseball thumps Collegiate

There was a little bit of everything. On the mound, David Spinosa surrendered just one run for St. Anne’s-Belfield. In field, John Siciliano was there to a make a spectacular catch to help Spinosa out of his only jam. And at the plate, the entire Saints order found a way to string together runs. In the end, it was a quick game, and behind the all-around performance, STAB handled visiting Collegiate 11-1 via run-rule.

“We played a complete game tonight,” said St. Anne’s coach Alan Swanson. “We threw well. We didn’t make errors. We came through in the clutch and hit and ran the bases very well. It was a pretty good game for us tonight.”

The Saints got to work in the bottom of the first inning as the top of the order got on base and the heart of the lineup brought in two runs.

Two innings later, St. Anne’s went up by another four runs, this time behind the lower-middle portion of the order. Then in the bottom of the fourth the lead was stretched to nine runs as Cole Marston was able to take home on a passed ball and Kevin White knocked in the first of his two RBI singles.

Collegiate answered in the top of the fifth with a single before drawing three walks to bring home their only run of the game. However, with the basesloaded Spinosa worked through trouble and with two outs, Siciliano closed the door on a sliding catch on a blooper hit along the foul line in shallow right field.

“John made a great play there and that was awesome,” Spinosa said.

In the bottom of the fifth, STAB wrapped the game up by scoring a pair of runs including a walkoff single from White.

“Right now I’ve just been focusing on what the situation calls for,” White said. “Whether it’s sending the runner from first to second or driving them in from third – if you just focus on the situation the result usually comes.”

White finished the game 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a pair of walks. Spinosa provided more than enough run support for himself by going 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Brian Yeagle was also 2 for 3 and chipped in two RBIs.

Spinosa earned a complete game win with seven strikeouts to just two hits as he relied heavily on his fastball and the Cougars struggled to get around on it.

“He’s got a good fastball,” Swanson said. “David’s got a live arm, a very live arm.”

St. Anne’s (20-2) heads to Collegiate on Friday at 5 p.m.
