Second half surge sparks Western girls lacrosse

In the first half, the Charlottesville girls lacrosse team gave Western Albemarle some significant trouble. But all that change in the second half. Up by just a pair of goals at halftime, the Warriors took control for the last 25 minutes and picked up an 18-9 win on the road.

Charlottesville scored first and was able to keep a back and forth pace with Western in the early going. The Warriors then jumped up by five goals, but the Black Knights clawed back with three unanswered scores to end the first half.

But behind a vaunted attack, Western poured it on after the break, outscoring Charlottesville 10-3.

For the Warriors, Abby Wheeler led all scorers with seven goals while teammate Ellen Shaffrey chipped in five of her own and an assisted another. Jordan Haws and Jeanette Fellows each had a pair of goals and assists.

Charlottesville’s Michaela Foky and Sarah Nissen scored eight of their team’s nine goals with four a piece. Black Knight’s goalkeeper Anny Foky also gave Western fits as she stop 15 of the 36 shots she faced.

Western (6-2, 3-0 Jefferson) heads to James River on Monday at 7 p.m.

Charlottesville hosts Eastern View on April 30th at 6:45 p.m.
