Patriots edge Powhatan for critical victory

Albemarle’s Drake Bryant broke loose for a touchdown from 26 yards out and Chandler Carrera put the Patriots up in the third quarter with a point after kick.

From there, the Patriots held on tight and picked up a huge 7-6 road victory over Powhatan Friday night.

The Indians took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter on a 4-yard Logan Allen run, but the advantage didn’t hold up despite both teams piling up punts during the low-scoring struggle. Neither squad managed many third-down conversions against the two stout defenses, with Albemarle converting just one time in 10 chances.

Still, Albemarle senior Dominique Talley put together a solid performance, rushing for 86 yards on 21 touches a week after shredding Western in a breakout game. He also completed a 41-yard pass, finding Kevin Bernardino for the long game. Richie DeLoria checked in with 57 yards on four catches to handle the bulk of the passing game. D.G. Archer went 6 for 13 for 73 yards on the night.

Allen finished with 96 yards and the touchdown on 27 carries. The Indians managed just 30 yards through the air on the night.

Albemarle will try and make it two in a row at home against Charlottesville next Friday night as the Patriots host Homecoming.
