Pair of Western wrestlers win Conference 29 titles

Neither Western Albemarle nor Monticello were in the mix for the team wrestling title at the Conference 29 championships Saturday at Stuart’s Draft. That honor went to team champion Waynesboro, but several individual wrestlers from Monticello and Western made a lot of noise at the tournament.

Western’s Andrew Dickerson won the conference championship at 113 pounds with a pin, adding a Conference 29 title the two Jefferson District titles he won as a sophomore and junior. Western’s Chris Miller also won a title, pinning Monticello High’s Tony Talbert in the first period to take the championship at 182 pounds.

Western had several other wrestlers place in the top four to advance to the 3A West tournament next week. Asa Shin at 126, Kieran Riley at 132, Khalil Bland at 138, Gabe Rody-Ramazani at 145, Sean Sawayer at 152, Nate Riley at 160 and Dante Henry at 285 all advanced to the region championships.

Monticello also put together a strong day with several wrestlers advancing to the region tournament. Logan Zimmerman at 120 pounds, Ryan Brown at 138 pounds, Tony Talbert at 182 pounds and Sean Means at 195 pounds all punched their ticket to the 3A West clash.

Western finished fourth as a team behind Waynesboro, Turner Ashby and Broadway. With Fort Defiance finishing fifth, Monticello checked in at sixth as a squad.
