Pack of local wrestlers advance out of Conference 23

A trio of local schools — Charlottesville, Louisa and Fluvanna — competed in the Conference 23 wrestling championships at John Handley in Winchester on Saturday, and all three squads put together some solid results.

Three Louisa County wrestlers won the conference title in their respective weight classes, with Jeffrey Sisk winning at 113 with a pin in the title match, Randy Rustick winning at 138 with a pin and Louisa’s Gavin Tingen winning with a pin.

Charlottesville earned a championship as well with senior Wade Kammauff winning at 170 pounds against Louisa’s James Cusick in the final. Kammauff took a 2-0 lead before the match ended up tied at 3-3 late in the second period. Then with 30 seconds to go, Kammauff snagged a 5-3 lead with under 30 seconds in the match, eventually winning 5-4.

Louisa’s other region qualifiers (wrestlers who placed in the top four) were Zain Schwartz, Corey Champion (who was the runner-up at 120), Noah Gallegos, Richard Gallegos (runner-up at 132), Brian Comploier (runner-up at 145), Jordan Spotswood, Sean Alberts, Miguel Staples, Ryan Norwood and Alex Seay

Charlottesville’s other region qualifiers were Jonah Wermter and Jahquae Howard

Fluvanna advanced four wrestlers to the 4A North Region tournament: Craig Russo, Dalton Wentzel, Donnie Wilson, Matthew Linblad.
