Nelson falls to Central Lunenberg

Nelson County couldn’t build on last week’s momentum on the road Friday night against Central Lunenburg.

A week after ringing up 64 points in a win over William Monroe, the Governors stumbled against Lunenburg, a state semifinalist in 2011, falling 63-8.

Lunenburg was intent on bottling up Nelson quarterback Tyler Vest. A week after a 449-yard outing against William Monroe, Vest scratched out just 46 yards on 12 carries as Nelson struggled to hold onto the ball and Lunenburg kept pilling up points. Devonte Turner fared slightly better per carry, with 36 yards on five touches for Nelson, but still couldn’t ignite the Governors’ offense.

Vest did unleash a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown early in the second half, but Nelson trailed by 35 already at the time.

“They made big plays and we just didn’t tackle well,” said Nelson coach Mark Wells.

That’ll have to improve next week against a Riverheads team that will make squads that struggle with sure tackling pay in a big way with their ground and pound offense built around tight splits on the offensive line. Nelson takes on the Gladiators on the road at 7:30 p.m.
