Monticello boys soccer stops Charlottesville

Monticello struck the latest surprising blow in a wild, unpredictable Jefferson District soccer season with a 2-1 victory Thursday against Charlottesville.

The Mustangs got going early when Jacob Bailey found the back of the net just a minute into the proceedings. Charlottesville couldn’t counter before the break

and Monticello held a 1-0 advantage at the half.

Six minutes into the second half, Monticello struck again, this time by the foot of Kevin Gomez. As Monticello tried to sit back on a 2-0 lead, they came up short when Charlottesville led a counter attack in the 70th minute, after taking the ball the length of the field the ball was played back to Christian Cost who smashed the ball past the out stretched hands of the Monticello keeper to make the score 2-1.

The scoring ended there though as the final ten minutes saw a slew of opportunities but neither team successfully finished.

The Black Knights host Fluvanna County in the regular season finale while Monticello tries to build on the momentum from the Thursday victory in a road tilt with Louisa County.
