It wasn’t pretty, but Monticello’s baseball team picked up a win in its season opener Friday night, rolling 16-8 over Courtland.
The Mustangs leapt out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, and never trailed, building on the lead by drawing 13 walks and banging out 11 hits as a team. Defensively though, eight errors plagued the Mustangs, allowing Courtland to hang in the game as Monticello surrendered seven unearned runs while allowing just three hits.
Will Decker, John Page, Justin Felvarakis, Josh Malm and Evan Despain all notched two hits each, with Malm, Flevarakis and Despain each also knocking in two runs. Flevarakis also scored four runs.
Brandon Beasley, Sean Byrnes and Jonathan Heuchert combined to handle the duties on the mound and strike out seven as a group.
The Mustangs (1-0) take on Fork Union Tuesday on the road.
