Madison baseball stays alive with upset

Madison County’s baseball team upset top-seeded George Mason last night 2-1 in the Bull Run District semifinals.

Collin Tucker went the distance on the mound for the Mountaineers and allowed only one run on four hits while striking out five. Tucker got help from his defense when Brandon Rutherford made a stellar over the shoulder catch in right center field in the bottom of the sixth inning to save a run.

Casey Campbell doubled down the leftfield line in the fourth to drive home the first run and in the sixth inning, Dylan Shifflette scored from second on a ground ball when the Mustangs tried to turn a double play. Rutherford beat the throw to first and Shifflette then beat the throw home for the decisive run.

Madison will travel to Manassas Park tonight for the championship game. A win tonight would earn Madison a trip to next week’s Region B Tournament.
