Last-second touchdown lifts Monticello over Lee

Few teams have held Monticello’s Isaac Robinson and Sam Patterson in check, but R.E. Lee found a way Friday to get it done. The inexperienced but athletic Leemen held Robinson to 84 yards on the ground and held Patterson without a catch.

It turns out that that’s not even enough to beat the Mustangs.

On the final play of the game Friday night after a solid second half rally by R.E. Lee, Jhalil Mosley provided the dagger with a three-yard toss Nathan DiGregorio that lifted Monticello to a 26-24 victory that secured the No. 3 spot in the Division 3, Region II playoffs next Friday.

DiGregorio had 90 yards and two touchdowns on seven catches. Mosley went 11 for 25 for 155 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with Sean Williams for a 16-yard touchdown in the second quarter that gave the Mustangs a 20-12 lead at the break. It was Williams’ first catch of the season.

Patterson did make an impact on defense with a 35-yard fumble return that opened the scoring in the game.

Lee moved the ball almost exclusively on the ground with quarterback Dylan Horne rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown while Eric McDavis had a pair of touchdowns on just nine carries.

Monticello will clash with cross-county rival Western Albemarle Friday in the regional playoffs.
