Anna Sumpter made her return to the lineup for Western Albemarle’s girls basketball team after sitting out last year rehabbing a torn ACL, and the junior standout picked up right where she left off as a freshman in the Warriors’ 58-21 win over Altavista in the opening game of the Warrior Tip-Off Tournament.
Sumpter finished with 12 points, seven steals, three rebounds and two assists, helping orchestrate a fast start by the Warriors when they ripped off a 14-0 lead to start the contest.
The Warriors spread the ball around on offense, with sophomore Eleri Hayden chipping in nine points while junior Natalie Marbury and sophomore Deja Newton-Grant finished with seven each. Junior guard Julia Haws had six on the night to go with four steals.
Alex Starsia checked in with four blocks, four rebounds and three assists in a well-rounded effort. Marbury also had three assists and a pair of steals in the win while Shannon More had five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
The Warriors will face Jefferson Forest Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Tip-Off Tournament title game.
Monroe squads sweep Rappahannock
William Monroe’s boys basketball team picked up its third-straight win Thursday night, beating Rappahannock 94-43.
Keegan Woolford led the Dragons with 21 points while Anthony Terry chipped in 18. The Dragons are now 3-0 and face off with Charlottesville Friday night.
The Monroe girls also beat Rappahannock, winning 43-36 for the squad’s first win of the season.Sophomore Kristin Shifflett and senior Breanna Strother each checked in with 13 points. Strother also had six steals while junior Makayla Morris finished with eight points and four steals. Sophomore Da’Jour Strother posted seven points and eight rebounds on the night.
Orange squads pick up wins over Spotsylvania
The Orange County girls rolled past Spotsylvania Thursday night, winning 74-9 to move to 2-0 on the year. Markiana Smith led the Hornets with 14 points on the night.
Rebecca Harve finished with 12, Laine Harrington with 11, Elisha Richardson had 10 and Kiani Hudgens finished with 10 as all five Orange starters reached double figures.
The Hornets now jump into Jefferson District play, starting with Monticello Tuesday at home.
The Orange County boys team bounced back from an early week loss to Eastern View to snag their first victory of the season, beating Spotsylvania 56-48.
Trevon Smith sparked Orange with 17 points, with 16 of them coming in a first half where the Hornets built a six-point lead.
J’Air Rawlings and John Gillum each had 13 points for the Hornets.
Orange opens Jefferson District play Tuesday on the road against Monticello.
