Fork Union wins Prep League track, Woodberry takes second

RICHMOND – Fork Union’s track team shined in all areas on Saturday as it captured another Prep League title. The Blue Devils garnered 154 points to outdistance second-place Woodberry Forest (135) and St. Christopher’s School (129).

Fork Union put together a solid all-around effort as it scored in 14 of 17 events, including 10 first-place finishes. The Blue Devils got strong performances in the field events from Andre Parker, who won the shot put with his throw of 52-08, a personal-best, and Jordan Roach, who claimed the top spot in the discus (161-02). Also impressive was Obiero Okeyo, who was first in the triple jump with a leap of 45-08.25, a new meet record. Teammate Kenan Verna finished third.  Tyron McDade was also an event winner, securing first place in the high jump followed by Okeyo.

FUMA also excelled in the relays as the 4×100 and 4×400 teams both captured wins. The 4×100 relay team of Denver Wright, DJ Randle El, Parker and Andrew Odenyo set a new meet record, finishing ahead of Woodberry with its time of 43.47. Randle El teamed with Anton Bartesevich, Devian Washington and Michael Idziak for a win in the 4×400 in a time of 3:31.15.

Wright and teammate Richard Quittenton were first and second, respectively in the 110-meter hurdles, while Quittenton took top honors in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 42.07. Other event winners included Parker, who bounced back after a false start in the 100-meter dash to take the 200-meter dash, and Idziak, who was first in the 800.

Not to be outdone, the Tigers had their share of highlights on the afternoon. Kevin Bennert was a multiple winner, as he captured the top spot in the 1600 (4:24.91) and 3200 meters (9:37.22). Bennert, who is headed to Wake Forest, was selected as the meet’s top running event performer. C.J. Prosise, who was named the meet’s most outstanding athlete, won the 100-meter dash (11.18), was second in the 200, and fourth in the long jump. He also anchored the second place 4×100 relay team. Jonathan Yellets claimed first place in the 400.

Both teams will compete in the VISAA state meet on Saturday at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond.
