Fluvanna girls cruise past Albemarle

On Wednesday night, Fluvanna’s girls basketball team hosted Albemarle and the Flucos came out firing on all cylinders from start. Every facet of the game seemed to go in their favor, as they rolled to a 52-17 victory.

“We’re really starting to gel you know, I think we’re starting to figure things out, and we can be a lot of fun to watch,” said Fluvanna coach Nick Ward. “We’re still young, we’re going to miss easy chippies but tonight I felt like we were able to run our offensive system, they went zone and we were really patient and picked the zone apart.”

The Flucos scored at all levels against the zone defense Albemarle played, but they also caused havoc defensively, creating turnovers and only allowing seven points in the first half.  Meanwhile, the offense started the game on an 8-0 run and never looked back.  Alana Carter-Johnston scored the first six points of the game for the Flucos, and she ended the game as their leading scorer with 25 points. She also had multiple steals, and got out on the break for many easy buckets in transition for her team. Taty Turner also had a standout performance with 11 points and Abby Seal with seven.

“We just really know how to work together and when somebody’s not doing what they’re supposed to do somebody has their back to tell them where they’re supposed to be,” said Carter-Johnston.

The Flucos’ team defense stayed strong long after the halftime buzzer, as they held the Patriots scoreless for the entire fourth quarter.  Amaya Pendleton tried to help the Patriot offense get going with her 10 points, but the Flucos’ defensive pressure was too much to overcome.

“We’ve only got seven kids tonight, but we’ve been preaching to them to get down and get nasty, like just get down and play your butts off and that’s the thing our kids did tonight,” said Ward.

The Flucos will head to Orange on Friday night, while the same night the Patriots will host Charlottesville.
