Fellows paces Western girls lacrosse

Jeanette Fellows took the reins Wednesday night and helped spark Western Albemarle’s girls lacrosse squad to a 17-5 victory over Salem, an lead-in to the Warriors’ much-anticipated showdown with St. Anne’s-Belfield Thursday.

Fellows poured in six goals as she, Anna Liebowitz and Ellen Shaffrey continue to emerge as a three-headed scoring monster. Liebowtiz dished out five assists to go with her one goal and Shaffrey posted five goals on the night. Shaffrey, as usual, was a force on the draw control, pulling down eight draws on the night. That performance helped give the Warriors a 19-5 advantage on the draw.

Bridgett Shaffrey and Peyton Brandt also got in on the offensive act, with Shaffrey scoring twice and registering a pair of assists while Brandt set the table for her teammates with a trio of assists. That balanced offensive firepower helped Western jump out to an 11-3 lead.

Christine Fortner and Maya Langman combined for 11 saves on the night in the cage for the Warriors.

Salem keeper Allison Shannon came up with 12 stops on the night while Morgan Lesson led Salem in goals with a pair of scores.
