Charlottesville’s Lilly headed to Handley as AD

Charlottesville’s Rick Lilly is headed to John Handley High in Winchester as the Judges’ new Student Activities Director, the same position he’s held for five years at Charlottesville.

“I am personally indebted to Rick for his leadership during a difficult time of transition and for helping to redefine the role of the athletics and activities at CHS through sportsmanship and character,” said Charlottesville principal Thomas Taylor in an email to the CHS staff.

Taylor expects to move quickly in the next couple of weeks to fill the spot as the Black Knights look for a smooth transition into the next era in Charlottesville athletics.

Lilly, a 1997 Charlottesville graduate and the student activities director for the Black Knights’ program for the last five years, will take over effective July 1 at Handley.

Lilly has overseen a facelift of the Charlottesville main gym and the installation of the new turf field utilized by football, soccer, lacrosse and field hockey. He also oversaw the hiring of a pair of football coaches during his time with the Black Knights, including current coach Eric Sherry.

Before his time as the athletic and then activities director, Lilly taught social studies at CHS.

He has served as the head of the Dogwood Track Classic meet that at one point was one of the state’s marquee meets under his stewardship.

“Although we are all sad to see Mr. Lilly leave CHS, we also rejoice in his personal success and this exciting new career opportunity,” Taylor continued in the email. “We wish him well on his journey and we know that John Handley High School (a Region II rival of ours) will benefit from his many talents.”

Lilly, who’s wife also just had his second child, will begin his duties at Handley on July 1.
